Little wrong with "I wanted more excitement from life, I wanted more life in my years, and I wanted more than two days a year that I actually remembered," if you remember that some hard work is necessary for these things, that there's always a time cost, and that there are things that are money-free that will achieve these goals.
We are not entitled to the first and last and there is journaling.
"...rather than just work because he’s bored."
Not the only reason people work, excitement and worth can come from work.
goals of not working
-to not be bored
-to fulfill a purpose
-to achieve bucket list
---mini retirements
---learned skills, languages
---traveled
Question: What does work prevent you from doing that you'd give up 9-5 for?
'conversation-worthy'
"interesting people in the room" (I admit to a desire)
How do these goals fit my life goals?
[not necessarily answers, but something missing in own circumstances] (catchy title)
"lifestyle design" as "distraction" (something to think about)
(This not being my def; mine as more literal.)
//getting to the point of comfort with someone else's language/pov
[coping versus solving]
deep issues
Perhaps the system does not address these issues. I'd have to learn more about the system than take the article author's word for it.
more openness, perhaps?
[What will fill that hole? [The point being, travel is not a complete answer. The deep issue, the author supposes, is that human nature is the struggle. Humans take their problems with them, despite a change of venue, income, etc.] [These things can improve the environment, but the inner issues must still be addressed for true lifestyle improvement.
(For me, and as I've come to believe, everyone, the complete answer is Jesus (the reason we say He is love, joy, peace, not just gives), but I somewhat digress.)
a little bit more on how the author is defining distraction (different travel locale)
"The vast majority of long-term travelers like travel bloggers, vagabonds, and other folks often complain of being lonely. Whereas the dream originated with some kind of 4 hour work week muse, once you’re sitting on the beach alone, with having almost no work to do, you realize it’s not all that it’s chalked up to be."
this being the point with which I somewhat disagree, though I have not studied Ferriss well enough to be considered more knowledgeable than the author
Once you free up life in this manner, you are more free to accomplish YOUR purpose, rather than a boss', a company's, etc.
//From http://milkthepigeon.com/2012/08/08/reasons-not-to-quit-your-job-and-travel-the-world, one of my "answers":
What takes away the feeling of unease? What makes me fulfilled? What makes me who I am?
completely: God
incomplete but contributing (Yes, it seems a contradiction, but it is true. I don't fully understand it, but I know it, believe it, feel it, etc.):
-(for real? computing?)
helping others
when others understand me, try really hard to, or partially understand me, especially when they act and speak from that understanding, rather than solely trying to accomplish their own goals or undermine me for fun
singing, especially in a meaningful way
more in this vein later
somewhat, but not on their own and not worth sacrificing others (do not fulfill "If I could just _____, I'd be (do/have/etc.) _____. (being society)):
travel
[what is good at work:
close friends
stuff you actually want to work on]
[not being an envy of interesting ideals (distractions, vacay), but helping others to achieve what they want and achieving what I want
probably they would not envy me if they were fulfilled anyway, except for the inherent nature of envy*
major "answer" (and further definition of distraction)
//Can/am I add(ing) to this conversation? what to do with notes: share, personal improvement, agree/disagree/persuade (my own authority and agency) (see adding and why professors have discussions), etc.
"You have money, and you have freedom, and you’re doing fun stuff to cross off your bucket list – but you still feel listless. You still don’t feel quite right."
Maybe, for a time, these are the things that make life feel right. However, they are not life. Though, you can bring real life into that setup, as far as I am concerned.
[money and freedom, people and meaning]
(This author has achieved this setup, so he is speaking with a point-of-view unique to mine that carries more weight. Sincere congratulations on doing it and then giving advice about it.)
[first two, most appealing to full-time; second two, not achievable through Ferriss/first two?]
As someone without a job, I want to build my life the right way. Money and freedom are not a distraction.
"I’ve often talked about distraction a lot – it’s one of the main coping mechanisms that people have when they hate the [crap] out of their daily existence."
more on the definition
A reason I disagree to an extent--it's not always a hate for what you have, but it can be useful in different ways (unhealthy to always be "on"--observation of a close friend)
[Dropouts don't do healthy things, they do distracting things. (not always, but I, too, have observed this trend) (When they are moving in a positive direction, what does that mean?) (when they use those things but also move in a positive direction..., when time cannot be filled with just those things, but they are using them to fill up space...)]
"And there’s a reason for that. It’s because they dull the senses, let you temporarily forget about life, and just pass the hours in the least painful way – by turning off the mind." [self-medication]
"Whatever deeply rooted human issues you already have will not go away by becoming the next Tim Ferriss."
What about Tim Ferriss? Did it work for him, or is it just a book?
[humanity issues from which distraction or escape will not wholly solve:
loneliness
living in a [crappy] location
having a boring spouse or a terrible job
//saving sensitive readers by removing offensive language (don't have to offend to get point across, but fine for someone who converses in that language); do not use that language myself to make my points, readership probably overarchingly doesn't either)
Part one ends, 3 aspects of human nature next
